The Benefits of Bach Flower Remedies for Mental Health

Mental health problems can be extremely debilitating and affect all aspects of an individual's life. While there are many effective treatments available, some people may find that Bach flower remedies offer additional relief and like the fact that they’re natural and don’t come with any side effects. In this post, we'll explore the benefits of Bach flower remedies for mental health and discuss how they can be used to effectively treat a range of conditions.

What are Bach flower remedies and how do they work?

Bach flower remedies are a type of alternative medicine that is based on the idea that flowers have unique healing properties. Dr Bach created the flower remedy system in the 1930s and they’ve been used widely since, commonly known and used as Rescue Remedy which is a five-flower formula which is used for emergency or stressful situations.

Many people don’t know that there are actually 38 different Bach flower remedies, each of which addresses a specific emotional issue, such as anxiety or depression.

Bach flower remedies are made by infusing flowers in water either through boiling or leaving in the sun. The remedies work by helping to restore balance in the body's energy field, re-balancing any emotions which have turned negative and improving overall wellbeing. Bach flower remedies are popular among those who are looking for a natural way to improve their emotional health.

What conditions can Bach flower remedies help with?

Some of the most common conditions that Bach flower remedies are used for include anxiety, depression, stress, sleep problems, and low motivation. However, they can also be helpful in managing emotions during different stages of life, such as menopause, teenage angst and grief.

They are a simple and effective way of getting help with your mental health or every day emotional issues, no matter how big or small. Across the 38 different remedies all emotions are covered so you’ll be able to find at least one which can help with whatever issue you’re facing.

The benefits of using Bach flower remedies for mental health

If you are looking for a safe and effective way to improve your emotional health, Bach flower remedies may be worth considering.

Here is a list of some of the many benefits of using Bach flower remedies:

  1. They’re completely natural – no nasties going into your body
  2. No side effects and no withdrawal effects – you can stop using them at any time
  3. They have been used safely since the 1930s
  4. They can be used alongside existing medication without impacting them. They work complementary to other forms of mental health treatment
  5. No major allergens
  6. Vegan
  7. They work reasonably quickly if you’re taking the right remedies – a treatment bottle lasts 3 weeks, after which time you should have felt the balancing effect of the remedies, though you will often need more than one
  8. Simple to use – simply take four drops, four times a day in your mouth or you can add to a drink or water bottle
  9. They're safe to use by people of all ages including babies and pregnant women

How to choose the right remedy for you

You can work with up to seven remedies at any one time. When choosing the remedy, think about the emotions that you’re feeling right now. It’s easy to think “I need them all!” and you may well need that all at some point in your life, but you likely don’t need them all in this present moment.

It’s important to be self-aware and reflective about what’s going on within you at this present moment. The remedies work like peeling an onion – we address the outer layers first so any surface emotions that you can feel today. Then as those emotions get rebalanced, other emotions might come to the surface which were hidden below the surface.

If you select the “wrong” remedies for you (ones that you don’t actually need) nothing bad will happen, it will just dampen down the effects of any that you do need.

How to use Bach flower remedies for best results

You take Bach flower remedies by mouth either directly into the mouth / on the tongue or as drops in a glass of water. With combination remedies (where you have a treatment bottle made up with more than one remedy) you should take a minimum of four drops, four times a day. These should ideally be spaced out during the day with one dose first thing in the morning, one dose just before you go to sleep and two more at intervals during the day.

You can’t overdose on Bach flower remedies so if you’re feeling your emotions more intensely you can take more often (say every 15 minutes.) Follow your intuition. It can also be beneficial to take more frequently during the first two days of a new treatment bottle.

The potential side effects of using Bach flower remedies

The remedies do not cause side effects but in some rare instances people have reported feeling more strongly the emotional state they are trying to treat before it clears after a few days. Keep taking the remedy - this should only last a few days.
