Causes of Flight Anxiety

For some people, the thought of flying can be daunting. And for some, this fear can be so severe that it impacts their daily lives on the run up to a flight. While the causes of flight anxiety can vary from person to person, there are a few common factors that may contribute to this fear. For instance, many people who suffer from flight anxiety have a fear of loss of control. This may be due to a previous bad experience on a flight, or simply because they feel like they have no control over the situation when they're in the air. Other common causes of flight anxiety include a fear of heights, claustrophobia, and a general fear of flying. Whatever the cause, flight anxiety can be a real challenge to overcome. But with the help of a professional therapist, natural remedies for travel anxiety and some self-care techniques, many people are able to fly without any problems.

Natural Remedies for Anxiety

If you suffer from anxiety when flying, there are a few natural remedies for flight anxiety you can take to help ease your mind. Anxiety is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. While there are many prescription medications available to treat anxiety, some people prefer to use natural remedies. There are a number of effective natural solutions for anxiety, including herbs, essential oils, and dietary changes. Herbs such as chamomile, passionflower, and lavender have long been used to treat anxiety and promote relaxation. Plus, there’s Bach flower remedies such as Rescue Remedy – which we’ll be focusing on for the purpose of this blog post. Essential oils such as lavender oil and bergamot oil can also be used to reduce stress and promote calmness. And finally, making dietary changes such as reducing sugar intake, eating more omega-3 fatty acids, and getting enough sleep can also help to reduce anxiety levels. By experimenting with different natural anxiety medications for flying, it is possible to find an approach that works best for you.

Additionally, deep breathing exercises and visualisation techniques can also help to calm your nerves. By taking some simple steps before your flight, you can make the experience less stressful and more enjoyable.

What are Bach flower remedies?

Bach flower remedies are natural remedies which use high vibration flowers to bring the body back into balance. They’re made by infusing water with these flowers through either boiling or leaving in the sun. There are 38 different flower remedies plus Rescue Remedy which is a five flower combination. The remedies were made by Dr Bach, a physician and homeopath, in the 1930s and they’ve been used widely ever since. They’re a natural, gentle and safe way of managing emotional issues including anxiety, depression, stress, motivation and more. Each different flower remedy related to a different emotional state - including some natural remedies for travel anxiety.

Rescue Remedy was created by Dr Bach as a combination to have on hand in case of emergencies or stressful situations when there’s no time to create a personalised blend. Many people have heard and use Rescue Remedy but they don’t know about the full flower remedy system. Rescue Remedy is a great combination to have on hand but if there are more long term issues that need supporting, it’s a good idea to look at the full list of 38 Bach flower remedies. After all, you shouldn’t need rescuing every day!

Bach Flower Remedies for Flight Anxiety

Here’s an overview of a few different Bach flower remedies for anxiety that may help you manage your fear of flying – both in the event and before and hopefully to ease your fear of flying completely.

Mimulus:

Mimulus is the flower remedy for anxieties with a known cause, for example a fear of flying! But this could also be anxieties around health, money or phobias about something. This is a great natural anxiety medication for flying.

White Chestnut:

White Chestnut is for those with an overactive mind, which plays thoughts over and over. This may be specific worries or just thoughts of the day. This is also an ideal Bach flower remedy for insomnia.

Rock Rose:

Rock Rose should be taken if your anxiety is at a heightened state of terror such as having a panic attack. This may be the same at the time of taking a flight and this will help bring your escalating panic down a notch.

Aspen:

Aspen is for anxieties with no known reason or cause, more a general sense of foreboding or uneasiness on a daily basis. This isn’t specifically related to a fear of flying but sometimes people with anxiety often find Aspen is helpful as this may co-occur.

Red Chestnut:

Red Chestnut is for fears for loved one’s safety. This would be suitable from a flight anxiety perspective if part of that anxiety was around the safety of your family.

Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy as mentioned above is a five flower formula which contains Star of Bethlehem (for trauma / shock), Impatiens (for patience), Rock Rose (for terror), Cherry Plum (for control) and Clematis (to ground yourself in the present.) This blend is designed to help in moments of stress or emergency when things get a bit much.

When working with the flower remedies you can combine Rescue Remedy with other Bach flower remedies into a treatment bottle. A qualified practitioner should do this for you as the amounts of each will differ when combining. In the case of flight anxiety, you may wish to combine Rescue Remedy (for the stressful event itself) with some of the other remedies mentioned above which can help more specifically anxiety and help to neutralise this fear on the run up to the flight and long term.

If you feel like any of the above remedies resonate, you can create a personalised remedy blend with up to seven remedies in a bottle with Mindful Remedies. We don’t have Rescue Remedy included as an option on the website but if you’d like this included as one of your seven, just drop us an email with your order number and we can add that in for you. Just make sure you only select a maximum of six others.
